translationpjct.com is an ongoing project to visually translate the Gospel of John verse by verse in digital format. It is free and open source in hopes that others will use it and share it. The images are both illustration and code/symbol.

It started with my interest in the nature of digital images online. Digital images live fascinating lives as they are downloaded, recontextualized, shared, and remixed by people. I wanted to make and release images that I could follow to witness these lives. When I decided to use scripture as the subject matter to base these images on, the nature of the project shifted in a significant way. It changed because scripture is not only affected by people, it affects people. I became concerned with creating a semiotic language that could convey the unique meaning of each verse and its context. I knew that as each image was released to the Internet and began its "life," its unique meaning would be affected by and affect the people who interacted with it. I don't know what will happen, but I think the lives of the images will be remarkable. These encounters will occur across boundaries of geography and language and carry a certain power and significance that will be visible.
