Artifacts and The Presence of Giants
When printed, the digital image becomes an artifact. It is not the same entity it was when it "lived" in the cyberworld.
The question now, is what are the attributes unique to an entity that can be sustained only in the digital world? Surely we know some of them: their genetic formats can be changed relatively easily, they are often altered multiple times over their lives, they are infinitely and perfectly cloneable, and they can breed virally.
However, the discovery of new artifacts has led to the realization that digital images can also grow to sizes not supported in the physical world. Sometimes, an artifact enters our physical world that is several feet in size, yet represents only a small portion of its total digital image. This prompts the question, how big are some of these creatures that exist in the cyber world? Are these artifacts of giant digital images just one-off anomolies, or are we on the verge of wrecking our ship on a perverbial Skull Island? With the coming of the Internet2 standard, which will allow much improved travel of large files over the web, the potential for our discovery of new images is expanding!
